Same-Day Electrical Service Across the Bronx
AE Electric provides same-day electrical service in the Bronx for homeowners, apartment building owners, and businesses throughout the borough. Whether you’re in a high-rise near Yankee Stadium or a single-family home in Riverdale, our licensed electricians respond fast and work to NYC code.
The Bronx splits cleanly into two very different kinds of electrical work. On one side are large pre-war and post-war apartment buildings — the Grand Concourse, Fordham, University Heights, Co-op City — where the work is meter banks, common-area circuits, riser capacity, and violation compliance for owners and managing agents. On the other are the detached and semi-detached houses of Riverdale, Fieldston, Throgs Neck, Country Club, and Pelham Bay, where it looks much more like suburban residential work. We do both, and the sections below cover each.

What Electrical Work Costs in the Bronx
Residential pricing in the Bronx tracks the citywide market. Multi-family work is quoted differently — by the scope of the riser, meter bank, or violation rather than by the individual fixture — so the table below covers the residential and per-unit jobs people most often ask about. We quote a flat rate for your specific job before work starts.
| Job Type | Typical Bronx Cost Range |
|---|---|
| Outlet replacement (single) | $85 – $175 |
| GFCI outlet installation | $100 – $200 |
| Hardwired smoke/CO detector (per unit) | $150 – $300 |
| Ceiling fan installation (existing wiring) | $150 – $300 |
| Circuit breaker replacement | $150 – $350 |
| New dedicated circuit | $200 – $500 |
| Apartment or house panel upgrade (100-amp) | $1,500 – $3,000 |
| Panel upgrade (200-amp, house or where riser allows) | $2,500 – $5,000 |
| Level 2 EV charger installation | $500 – $1,500 |
| Whole-house or whole-apartment rewire | $5,000 – $15,000+ |
| Emergency service call (after hours) | $150 – $300 service fee |

Multi-Family Buildings, Owners, and Managing Agents
The Bronx has a higher concentration of multi-family rental housing than any other borough, and the electrical work that comes with it is a different job from a single apartment repair. We work with building owners, managing agents, and superintendents on:
- Meter banks and house services — replacing or expanding multi-meter installations, correcting improperly split house and tenant loads, and upgrading the building service where capacity has run out.
- Common-area circuits — hallway and stair lighting, emergency and exit lighting, boiler and pump circuits, laundry rooms, and compactor rooms.
- Violation correction — an open electrical violation has to be physically corrected by a licensed electrician, then documented. We do the corrective work, file the permit, and handle the certificate of correction so the record actually clears. See our guide to ECB electrical violations.
- Hardwired smoke and carbon monoxide detectors — interconnected detector work across multiple units, scheduled to minimize tenant disruption. Our guide to NYC smoke, CO, and gas detector law covers the current requirements.
- Turnover and vacancy work — bringing an apartment to code between tenants, when access is easiest.
We are licensed and insured, issue certificates of insurance naming the owner and managing agent, and can schedule around tenant access. For portfolios, we are happy to walk multiple buildings and prioritize by risk rather than quoting one item at a time.
Pre-War Buildings and the Grand Concourse
The Grand Concourse holds one of the largest concentrations of Art Deco apartment buildings in the country, and much of it sits inside the Grand Concourse Historic District. Riverdale, Fieldston, Mott Haven, Longwood, and Clay Avenue are designated as well.
Two practical consequences. First, buildings of that era were wired for a fraction of today’s load — original risers were never intended to carry window air conditioners in every unit plus modern kitchens and home offices, which is why capacity, not the apartment panel, is usually the real constraint. Second, landmark designation governs the exterior: facade and entry lighting, a relocated meter or service head, and surface-run conduit on a visible elevation generally require Landmarks Preservation Commission approval. Interior work proceeds on the normal DOB track.
Houses in Riverdale, Throgs Neck, and the East Bronx
The detached and semi-detached neighborhoods of the Bronx look much more like Queens or Staten Island work. Common jobs here are 200-amp panel upgrades, rewiring homes that still have original mid-century or earlier wiring, adding circuits for finished basements and garages, exterior and landscape lighting, and Level 2 EV chargers in driveways and garages.
Older houses in Riverdale and Fieldston in particular often have original wiring that has never been touched. Where knob-and-tube is still live, insurers increasingly refuse to cover it — see our knob-and-tube guide. We perform full rewires and file all required DOB permits.
Permits, Con Edison, and the DOB Process
- Owners cannot pull their own electrical permit. NYC requires electrical filings be made by a licensed Master Electrician or Special Electrician — this applies to building owners and managing agents as well as homeowners.
- Filings go through DOB NOW: Electrical and appear on the building’s public DOB record, alongside any open violations.
- Electricians cannot self-certify the work. The DOB inspects before sign-off.
- Minor like-for-like swaps are the exception — a breaker rated 30 amps or under, or like-for-like panel parts at 150 volts or under, still require a licensed electrician but do not trigger a DOB inspection.
- Service upgrades involve Con Edison, and their scheduling usually sets the timeline on a building service change rather than the electrical work itself.
See our NYC electrical permit guide and how long electrical work actually takes.
Common Electrical Problems in Bronx Buildings
The Bronx has a mix of large pre-war apartment buildings, post-war housing developments, and single-family homes — each with its own electrical history. Some of the most common issues involve infrastructure in buildings that haven’t been updated in decades.
- Outdated panels in large apartment buildings — Many buildings in Fordham, University Heights, and along the Grand Concourse have panels last updated in the 1970s. If breakers trip regularly or tenants lose power during high-demand periods, the panel or the feeder likely needs replacement.
- Knob-and-tube wiring in older homes — Single-family homes in Riverdale and Fieldston often have original wiring untouched for 50+ years. We perform full rewires and file all required NYC DOB permits.
- Aluminum branch wiring — Common in homes and buildings from the 1960s–70s. Aluminum oxidizes at connection points and creates a fire hazard; the fix is remediating the connections, not ignoring them.
- Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels — Still present in mid-century Bronx housing, with a documented history of breakers that fail to trip under fault. Read why they should be replaced.
- Code violations from unlicensed work — It’s common in older Bronx buildings to find DIY or unpermitted electrical work. We identify these issues and repair them correctly — no temporary patches.
- Missing GFCI protection — Kitchens, bathrooms, and basements in older housing frequently have no GFCI protection at all. See what a GFCI outlet does.
- High demand in multi-family buildings — Buildings in Pelham Bay, Throgs Neck, and Co-op City often need dedicated circuits added to handle window AC units, in-unit appliances, and home offices.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Bronx neighborhoods do you serve?
The entire Bronx — Riverdale, Fieldston, Kingsbridge, Marble Hill, Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham, University Heights, Morris Heights, Highbridge, Tremont, Belmont, Concourse, Mott Haven, Port Morris, Hunts Point, Longwood, Melrose, Morrisania, Soundview, Castle Hill, Parkchester, Morris Park, Bronxdale, Pelham Parkway, Pelham Bay, Country Club, Throgs Neck, City Island, Co-op City, Baychester, Wakefield, Williamsbridge and Woodlawn.
How much does an electrician cost in the Bronx?
Residential pricing tracks the citywide market: $85–$175 to replace an outlet, $100–$200 for a GFCI, $150–$350 for a breaker replacement, $200–$500 for a new dedicated circuit, and $1,500–$3,000 for a 100-amp panel upgrade. Multi-family work is quoted by the scope of the riser, meter bank or violation rather than per fixture. We quote a flat rate before work starts.
Do you handle multi-family buildings?
Yes — multi-family panels and meter banks, house services, common-area circuits including hallway, stair and emergency lighting, boiler and pump circuits, and violation correction for building owners and managing agents. For portfolios we can walk multiple buildings and prioritize by risk rather than quoting one item at a time.
Can you clear an open electrical violation on my building?
Yes. An open electrical violation has to be physically corrected by a licensed electrician and then documented — correcting the condition alone does not clear the record. We do the corrective work, file the permit, and handle the certificate of correction so the violation actually closes out.
Do you work with managing agents and provide certificates of insurance?
Yes. We are licensed and insured and issue COIs naming the owner and managing agent as required. We can also schedule around tenant access, and handle turnover work between tenants when access is easiest.
Can you install hardwired smoke and CO detectors across a whole building?
Yes. We install hardwired and interconnected smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for compliance across multiple units, scheduled to minimize tenant disruption.
What electrical problems are common in the Bronx?
Older housing stock with undersized service, panels in large apartment buildings last updated in the 1970s, overloaded circuits, aluminum branch wiring in some 1960s and 70s buildings, Federal Pacific and Zinsco panels, unpermitted DIY work, and missing GFCI protection in kitchens and bathrooms.
Can I pull my own electrical permit as a building owner?
No. New York City requires electrical filings be made by a licensed Master Electrician or Special Electrician through DOB NOW: Electrical. This applies to building owners and managing agents just as it does to homeowners.
What should I do if I smell burning or see sparks from an outlet or panel?
Stop using the circuit and shut it off at the panel if you can do so safely. A burning smell, scorch marks or sparking at a panel is a fire risk, not a repair that can wait. Call us at (646) 846-0008 for same-day emergency service — and if there is smoke or active burning, call 911 first.
Do you offer same-day service in the Bronx?
Yes, seven days a week. Call or text (646) 846-0008.
