GFCI Outlet Installation NYC — Code-Compliant Service
GFCI outlets are required by NYC electrical code in kitchens, bathrooms, and anywhere near water — but a large portion of NYC’s older apartments still have standard outlets in those locations. AE Electric installs and replaces GFCI outlets throughout all five boroughs, same-day. Call now: (646) 846-0008

What Is a GFCI Outlet?
GFCI stands for Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. A GFCI outlet monitors the current flowing through a circuit and trips — cutting power in 1/40th of a second — the moment it detects even a small amount of current leaking to ground. That leakage is what causes electrocution. In a bathroom where you’re wet and touching a faulty hair dryer, a GFCI outlet is the difference between a shock and a fatality.
Where NYC Code Requires GFCI Outlets
The NYC Electrical Code (based on the NEC) requires GFCI protection in:
- All kitchen countertop receptacles — within 6 feet of the sink
- All bathroom receptacles — every outlet in the bathroom, no exceptions
- Outdoor receptacles — any outlet exposed to weather
- Garage receptacles
- Unfinished basements
- Crawl spaces
- Rooftop receptacles
- Any receptacle within 6 feet of a wet bar, laundry sink, or utility sink
In NYC, most pre-war and mid-century apartments were built before these requirements existed. The standard outlet in your bathroom is almost certainly a code violation if the building is older than 30 years and has never been updated.
Types of GFCI Protection We Install
- GFCI outlet — replaces a standard outlet; protects that outlet and any outlets “downstream” on the same circuit. Most common and most cost-effective for individual location compliance.
- GFCI circuit breaker — installed in the panel; protects every outlet on that circuit. Best when multiple locations on the same circuit need protection.
- AFCI/GFCI combination breaker — provides both ground fault and arc fault protection; required in bedrooms and living areas in new construction.

Common GFCI Scenarios in NYC
- Bathroom outlet keeps tripping — GFCI is working as designed; usually the outlet itself needs replacement or there’s a wiring fault downstream
- Kitchen outlet has no power — often a tripped GFCI outlet somewhere else on the circuit; we trace and reset or replace
- No GFCI in bathroom or kitchen — code violation; we install and restore compliance same-day
- Landlord required to update outlets before inspection — we handle multi-unit upgrades efficiently
- Pre-sale electrical compliance — GFCI upgrades are one of the most common items flagged on NYC pre-sale inspections
GFCI Outlet Installation Cost in NYC
Single GFCI outlet installation typically costs $75–$150 including parts and labor. Installing multiple outlets on the same visit reduces the per-outlet cost significantly. GFCI breaker installation runs $150–$250 depending on the panel and breaker type. We provide a firm quote before starting.
